As the days get shorter and the first crisp breath of autumn fills the air, it's time to lean into the season. There are 6 easy ways to transition your home decor for fall, allowing you to embrace the warm, cozy ambience that inherently comes with autumn. Let’s discover and celebrate the season.
My everyday style preference is cozy, neutral decor. But for fall, I amp this up a bit and lean into the warmer colors that celebrate the beauty of the season. I integrate touches of amber, burnt orange, rust, and hues of gold. I use the colors of nature as my palette to keep my overall esthetic elevated, but approachable. I apply this concept to all my suggestions below.
As the days get cooler, it's time to pack away lightweight textiles and bring out warmer, heavyweight materials like wool, fleece, cotton knit, and velvet to add cozy texture and warmth to your spaces.
This can include switching out comforters, throw blankets, pillows, and curtains to create warmth and richness that play up the season. Of course, you don’t have to change all of these, but pick the pieces that will make the biggest impact in your space.
Tip: I use throw pillow covers to easily transform my spaces seasonally. I invest is quality pillow inserts in a variety of sizes and reuse them. Covers are typically cheaper than buying filled throw pillows, they take up less storage space when not in use, and they are easier to clean.
Adding layers adds depth, interest, and coziness to a space. You can add layers in a variety of ways:
Tip: it is easy for “layers” to turn into “clutter.” Use layering in small doses around your home.
Vases and floral stems have become staple decor pieces in my home. Now is the time to transition away from summary florals and greenery, and opt for earthy dried stems like pampas, bunny tails, red eucalyptus, and wheat. It’s the time of year when nature becomes new again, so embrace its changing beauty to appreciate the season.
Keep floral arrangements feeling organic by layering your stems at different heights. Asymmetry also creates a natural, effortless look.
Tip: I love to integrate florals from my yard into my decor. I allow my previously cut white hydrangea stems dry out and keep them around for fall decorating. If you don’t have a garden, collecting a variety of dried branches to use in a large vase can also make a striking centerpiece that’s on point for the season.
Scent transforms everything. There is no faster way to transition your home for fall than with a warm, seasonal scent. The variety of fall fragrances bring back nostalgic memories while creating a spark of excited anticipation for the coming season. No matter what your favorite fall activity is—apple picking, pumpkin picking, baking, or campfires—it is precisely captured in candle form.
Candles are like magic, they can make even an ordinary moment feel special. Light them often and immerse your senses in the season.
Don’t forget those small spaces such as closets, mudrooms, and bathrooms. Reed diffusers are the perfect way to infuse fragrance in these spaces and make them feel special, too.
Tip: If you are burning a candle in a large room, you may opt to burn two or more at the same time to get the full effect of your candle’s scent.
Introduce tried and true materials like rustic wood and earthenware clay to your spaces to create organic moments.
It’s the time of year when I opt for darker wood trays, bowls, and risers to embrace the moodiness of the season. Trays, bowls, and risers provide the perfect background to create little “moments” throughout your spaces. Use them to display candles, wooden beads, dried florals, and decorative pumpkins.
Handmade earthenware vases sit beautifully solo or pair well with dried florals for a timeless styling moment. Larger vases can hold their own and fill vertical space while making a striking centerpiece on a shelf, table, cabinet, or countertop. Multiple vases that vary in size can be grouped together to fill horizontal space. They are as versatile as they are beautiful.
I hope you enjoy transitioning your home decor from summer to fall, and that these suggestions help you discover and celebrate all this season has to offer.
