There's something utterly refreshing about spring. After months of cold, dreary weather, once we sense that spring is around the corner we are revived with renewed energy. Many of us feel the urge to spruce up our homes and prepare with anticipation for the new season. Whether you are looking to purchase a few new items to refresh your space or work with that you already have - making a few changes can completely transform the feel of your home and transition your home for spring!
As the days get warmer, it’s time to make the switch to lightweight fabrics and textures. Swapping out heavy knits, wool, and fur for lighter, less bulky materials like cotton and linen will instantly freshen a space.
This can include switching out comforters, throw blankets, pillows, and curtains to create the light and airy feeling that is synonymous with spring. Of course, you don’t have to change all of these, but pick the pieces that will make the biggest impact in your space.
The change from bulky textiles to lightweight fabrics will also visually lighten and streamline your home for the new season.
After months of using deep, saturated colors, spring is the time to freshen up and go lighter and brighter. Take color cues from nature. As the grass grows back and the flowers bloom, use the fresh green and pastel hues as color inspiration to decorate your home for spring.
I don’t switch everything for a pastel hue, but I do integrate lighter colors into my neutral staples to achieve a light and airy feel.
This also doesn’t mean you have to remove all your darker, moody tones. Just mix in some lighter tones that complement your existing dark colors to achieve a fresh look.
A few minor color changes that can make a big impact as you transition to spring: change your taper candles, incorporate lighter throw pillows and blankets, choose pretty new dish towels, and upgrade the hand towels in your bathrooms.
I love switching the artwork in my gallery wall to reflect scenes of nature related to the new season. This is an easy way to celebrate each season’s unique beauty. For spring I am incorporating florals and landscapes with fields of lush greens and flowers.
Switching artwork seasonally can be pricey and difficult to find pieces you love. That's why I buy an assortment of picture frame sizes and update them with digital artwork. Currently I am loving vintage inspired nature pieces. I find beautiful digital artwork pieces on Etsy and print them at my local Walgreens. For a minimal time and financial investment, I can have updated artwork as often as I want.
I also like to swap the artwork in a few other frames to sprinkle the feeling of spring throughout my entire home. This is a great way to help rooms feel fresh and updated.
An easy way to refresh your dining and kitchen spaces for spring is to switch out your tableware pieces. There are a lot of options here—you can choose to make a few changes to refresh your dining experience, or go all in.
Scent is so powerful, it transforms everything. Even if you don’t change anything else in your home, a fresh new scent will transition your home for spring.
I always choose bright and refreshing or light and floral scents to help bring a sense of freshness and renewal that comes with the spring season.
Candles are like magic, they can make even an ordinary moment feel special. Light them often and immerse your senses in the season!
Don’t forget those small spaces such as closets, mudrooms, and bathrooms. Reed diffusers are the perfect way to infuse fragrance in these spaces and make them feel special, too.
Vases and floral stems have become staple decor pieces in my home. Now is the time to transition to fresh greenery and pretty florals to lighten and brighten your home. Spring is the time of year when nature becomes new again, embrace its changing beauty to appreciate the season.
Try using faux or fresh blooms like roses, hydrangea, and tulips. I typically choose natural green stems mixed with hydrangea for a refreshed, neutral look.
Keep floral arrangements feeling organic by layering your stems at different heights. Asymmetry also creates a natural, effortless look.
Spring is a great time to go through each space and declutter. I go from room to room, removing extra decor and items not in regular use. Removing all the “extra” helps create the simplistic light and airy feel we crave this time of year. Organizing and eliminating unnecessary items will make your spaces feel fresher, brighter, and more organized. I also use the decluttering process as an opportunity to thoughtfully add in pieces a little at a time.
The previous tip perfectly transitions into tip number 8. Twice a year I perform a deep clean of all my spaces. I go room by room and do a thorough cleaning, wiping all surfaces, moldings, doors, windows, washing curtains, mattress covers, and shampooing the carpets. Throw the windows open and let the fresh air in! Just like spring, a clean home is a fresh start.
If your home is feeling stagnant, refresh your spaces for spring by moving things around! This is the perfect opportunity to shop your own home. Try moving a side table from one room to another, adjust the seating arrangement in your living room, or move decor pieces from one space to another to instantly freshen things up! A few ideas:
